Annika hails from a small town at the northern end of the state of Florida, and grew up fully entrenched in the hospitality industry. Her father being a manager at a local pizza parlor led to her first restaurant job at 15 years old, which began a life-long love affair with food. At the ripe old age of 22, she was given the opportunity to take part in a study abroad semester in Florence, Italy and it was Tuscany that first sparked Annika’s interest in the world of wine.
During her undergraduate degree in art history, Annika continued working behind bars of all sorts as she made her way through school. Upon completion of her B.S., Annika relocated to D.C. to work on her Master’s degree, and began running the wine program at a small wine bar in Adams Morgan. After a few years of exposure to the vibrant District food scene (and a realization that desk life just wasn’t for her), Annika took the full-time plunge into the wine business. Following graduate school, she started running The Wine Bar at Northside Social in the Clarendon neighborhood of Arlington, VA. While completing her Advanced level certification through the Wine and Spirits Education Trust, she helped open Northside Social’s second location and built the entire wine and spirits list from the ground up. Shortly after passing her Court of Master Sommeliers Certified Exam, she decided to dive into the world of wine production and accepted a 4-month harvest internship with the James Beard Award Semi-Finalist Red Tail Ridge Winery, in the Finger Lakes region of New York. She is currently working on her American Wine Expert certification, so feel free to let her change your mind about domestic wines!
If Annika is in charge of the playlist at Maxwell, chances are high that you’ll be dancing in your seat to some Reggaeton or any playlist with a heavy dose of girl power (Whitney and Lizzo, anyone?). Her favorite pour is the Malabaila Nebbiolo D’Alba Spumante Rosè, because a day without pink bubbles is like a day without sunshine!
